The courage… the bravery… the moxy… the audaciousness that it must have taken for Elliot to muster the strength to come out as trans / queer.
You can probably actually HEAR me rolling my eyes.
I am 2,000% libertarian, or what some might a classical liberal. I don’t care what you do or what you screw — as long as it’s between consenting adults and nobody is getting hurt. You could come out as a hamster or a bowl of yogurt for all I care. It’s none of my business; and I think you deserve the same dignity as a trans / queer person as anyone else.
I don’t think people should be discriminated against for their sexual orientations or identities. After all, I’m attracted to the persons that I am attracted to. It’s hard-wired. I didn’t choose it. It just is. The only thing I have control over is how I conduct myself in the light of those attractions. My sexual identity is hard-wired as well. I didn’t choose it.
But there are two types of people that I don’t have much use for:
Faux-victims AND attention whores
Seriously, Elliot — this isn’t 1987. I read your Instagram post, and you lay it on reeeeeeeeeeally thick.
There’s no Christian Coalition waiting outside your studio with poster board signs. Your coming out will be condemned by NO ONE with an IQ above 100, and everyone in your circle will celebrate your “bravery”. Coming out as “whatever” just isn’t the lightning rod it used to be…
The closest thing to persecution that you will endure will be Netflix offering to pay you in a half dozen new roles. Playing the victim when you’re clearly not is vulgar; and being an attention whore is gross. Coming out as trans, queer, or non-binary is absolutely mainstream. It’s common to the point of becoming white noise in the public sphere.
But from the 30,000 foot view — it would be a little off-putting and creepy for anyone to make a special point of declaring the orientation of their junk for global consumption. NOBODY CARES. And that’s great — because it’s evidence of how far we’ve come.
Live long and prosper, Elliot. Just stop pretending that this was a scary decision.
